December 1, 2009 (Tuesday): World Aids Day.
YAFA Cebu's Andrea Mikko B. Ecarma, RN and Natasha Angelica R. Malinis, RN joined the Tri-City Local AIDS Council from Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu in the celebration of World Aids Day.
With this year's theme of "Universal Access and Human Rights", the Cebu City Multi-Sectoral AIDS Council jump started the event with a motorcade which began at the Center for Health Development (Region VII). It then passed Capitol area, Escario, Social Security System office, Gorordo Avenue, Sacred Heart School, Sikatuna Street, then finally, the Cebu City Hall.
Aside from YAFA, other groups and organizations with the same passion to stand up agianst HIV/AIDS were also present and wore red shirts to show their warm support to the World Aids Day Celebration. To mention some, FREELAVA, REMEDIOS AIDS FOUNDATION, BIDLISIW, Cebu Youth Center, and many others.
At the Plaza Sugbu, a brief but very vibrant and meaningful program took place in commemoration of the 21st year of WAD ever since it started back in 1988.
Some of the highlights of the program were the Interpretative Dance Contest based on this year's theme from representatives from the three participating cities; the Audience Question and Answer portion which revolved around the facts and figures of HIV and AIDS, and the most anticipated part of the program was the MISS GAY World Aids Day, in which the representatives where from the clubs and establishments covered by CCMSAC.
They showcased beauty, talent and intelligence in the various portions of the contest. All throughout the event, they captured much attention and awe from the audience and even the passers-by of Plaza Sugbu.
We were also very blessed to be graced with the presence and time of the Honorable Cebu City Vice-Mayor Michael Rama who gave an inspirational message and urged everyone to continue their advocacy and fight against HIV and AIDS.
Much thanks to Dr. Ilya Tac-an, head of CCMSAC and all the other individuals who had been so dedicated in making the event successful, and most especially for accommodating and welcoming YAFA to the celebration after a very short notice.
